Far West

Far West is another special place. It was in Far West that Joseph received revelations for what are now sections 115 and 119 in the Doctrine and Covenants. It was also here that the saints were commanded to build a Temple. They laid the cornerstones but were eventually driven out of Far West due to the persecutios and they were never able to finish the Temple. The cornerstones, however, are still there today.

Here are some more pictures of the temple site:

In front of the monument.

In the center of the Temple.
Here is a picture across the street from the Temple. This is where many of the log cabins were built, and where Joseph F. Smith (the son of Hyrum and Mary Smith) was born. Joseph F. Smith would later become the 6th President of the Church.

The Community of Christ Church has a meetinghouse across the street with a map of what Far West looked in its hey day. I found it interesting (and symbolic) that the Temple was the center of the city.
We really enjoyed visiting Far West. It was worth the extra drive there and we hope to visit again one day. Who knows...maybe next time it there will be a Temple.

Isn't it great to go see all those sites? We had such a great time doing that in April. I'm glad you can take time to go see all of them.

Funny how there is so little to see at Far West, yet such a unique spirit to that place.
